2020 Student and New Reporter Scholarships Available and Membership Award Nominations Open

Student Scholarships

There are two options in 2020 to apply for student scholarships: The Rosalie Stevens Student Scholarship and Sue Terry Technology at Your Fingertips Student Scholarship. Please read the eligibility requirements for each on the application page, as they differ slightly.

Rosalie Stevens Student Scholarship Award

In 1997, OCRA established the OCRA student scholarship award in an effort to encourage students who are currently pursuing their court reporting degree. This award represents an incentive toward scholastic achievement and future professional development.

In 2004, the award was renamed in honor of Rosalie Stevens. Rosalie served as a president to both OCRA and the National Court Reporters Association. Her enthusiasm and dedication to the profession was commendable and served as a shining example to future generations of court reporters.

Each year, OCRA accepts scholarship applications from student members and presents the $500 scholarship award at our annual conference. In addition, the winner also receives one year of OCRA membership and annual conference registration.

OCRA Cardinal Foundation Student Scholarship Award

In 2015, the OCRA Board of Directors recognized the importance of supporting the future of the court reporting and captioning profession and created the OCRA Cardinal Foundation Student Scholarship Award, in addition to the Rosalie Stevens Student Scholarship Award.

Each year, OCRA accepts scholarship applications from student members and routinely awards a $250 scholarship to a selected student out of the applicants for the Rosalie Stevens Student Scholarship. In addition, the recipient also receives one year of OCRA membership and annual conference registration.

Sue Terry Technology at Your Fingertips Student Scholarship Award

In 2018, OCRA Past President Sue Terry was sworn in as the President of the National Court Reporters Association. Sue has demonstrated herself as one of the leading technology experts in the reporting and captioning profession. Her commitment to OCRA, NCRA, and the profession serves as an example to all who know (or have heard about) Sue Terry.

For 2020, OCRA will award one $500 scholarship awards at our annual conference. In addition, the winners will also receive one year of OCRA membership and an annual conference registration.

Vernon C. Steele New Reporter Scholarship

Vernon (Vern) C. Steele was a long-time member, former president, and director of the Ohio Court Reporters Association. He spent his entire 47-year court reporting career in Cincinnati reporting for Hamilton County Common Pleas Judges Thomas Nurre, Kim Burke, and the late Ralph Kohnen. He held himself to a high standard of excellence and was well respected by his peers. Vern passed away December 14, 2014.

In memory of Vern Steele, the Ohio Court Reporters Association Cardinal Foundation and Vern's family would like to honor and recognize new reporters in the court reporting and captioning profession with a start-up scholarship to help with expenses. The scholarship may be awarded each year up to $1,000.

The inaugural Vernon C. Steele New Reporter Scholarship Award was awarded on April 23, 2016 during OCRA's 2016 Annual Conference.

OCRA Awards of Achievement and Recognition

The Ohio Court Reporters Association recognizes the outstanding dedication and achievements of fellow reporters. It is their outstanding efforts that inspire us to become not only better reporters, but more active and supportive OCRA members.

We urge your support in our recognition efforts and ask you to submit a nomination for an individual that you deem worthy of recognition.

OCRA traditionally present awards during its Annual Conference.

Glenn W. Stiles, Jr. Distinguished Service Award

This award is awarded for outstanding devotion and service to the court reporting profession and OCRA.

Martin Fincun Award

This award is given in recognition of a single, but outstanding contribution to diligently promote the goals of our profession and our professional association.

Diplomat Award

This award acknowledges members of OCRA who consistently work to further the goals of the association. The intent of the Diplomat Award is to create a method of recognizing worthy service and accomplishments that might go unheralded because it does not fall under the criteria required to receive the Martin Fincun or Glenn Stiles Award. The Diplomat Award can be bestowed on one or more members each year.

Additionally, other categories for which members have been nominated in the past include Legislative, Meritorious, Special, and Outstanding Associate Member.
